From the BBC Web Site:
In the 4x200m relay, Simon Burnett gave England's quartet
the perfect start. But after Alexander Scotcher and Dean
Milwain were unable to hold on to the lead, individual champion
Ross Davenport took over several metres behind Australia
and Scotland. And the 21-year-old, from Derby, timed his
charge to perfection to overhaul Robert Renwick in the final few
metres. "Australia have been the masters of this event for
many, many years," Davenport said. "They were a
weakened team without Ian Thorpe and Grant Hackett, but it doesn't
matter. On that medal it doesn't say Australia minus two, it just
says Australia and we beat them today."
From British Swimming web site:
The men’s 4x200m Freestyle team upset hosts Australia by
denying them gold in the event for the first time in 50 years.
The quartet of Simon Burnett (Wycombe), Dean
Milwain, Alex Scotcher (both Loughborough university)
and Ross Davenport (University of Bath) stayed strong,
with anchor Davenport reducing an Australian and Scottish
lead, to bring it home on the final length in 7:14.14.
“I was hurting on the first leg, but I wanted to get to
the wall to get the team in a good position,” said lead
swimmer Burnett. “It didn’t feel that hard, I think
the adrenaline took me through,” added Davenport.
“The English team is having a fantastic night in the pool.”
