Group Description and Expectations

Midland Squad is for swimmerss progressing toward Counties, East Midland Championships and National Championships. Targeted competitions for this squad will go outside the region to gain experience and future progression in the sport. Swimmers are expected to attend a seasonal swim camp to take place within the country or invited to attend the international camp with National. The main emphasis of the training program is improving technical and tactical skills while increasing training load.

Ages 12-14 as of 31st December

All Squad Expectations:

  • Has an excellent attitude, and desire to progress. Demonstrates a strong work ethic and committed to achieving the attendance requirement as determined by the Lead Coach.
  • Works to make technical changes in all four strokes, starts and turns.
  • Attends designated competitions and enters a wide range of events, as is expected for all squads.

Squad Criteria

  • Midland
  • All swimmers must meet the squad expectations and demonstrate an ability to withstand the training intensity of the squad.
  • Swimmers age 11 as of 31st December may be considered for Midland Squad based on ability to withstand the training intensity, and meet the skill and attendance requirement for the squad.

Midland Gold Step Up Program


  • Has achieved at least 1 East Midland Qualifying time either short course or long course.
  • All swimmers must meet the squad expectations and demonstrate an ability to withstand the training intensity of step ups with National Squad.
  • Achieving the performance standard will not automatically open access to National training sessions.

Coach’s Discretion for Midland and Midland Gold

Coaches reserve the right to move swimmers within our club pathway regardless of age and to the benefit of their individual stage of development

The Coaching Team

The squad is lead by Jamie Brown: Graduate of the City of Derby national squad, Jamie stills swims for fitness with the masters squad and provides valuable input into the masters squad.


Swimmers will need the following items: hat, goggles, mesh bag with kickboard, pullbuoy, hand paddles, freestyle snorkel, tennis ball and training fins. Drinks bottle.

Swimmers are expected to wear club kit and the club hat when they are representing City of Derby at competitions and open meets. For details of equipment, clothing apparel and branded City of Derby Swimming Club items that are available to purchase please visit the club kit section.
