Group Description and Expectations

Midland Development and Development 1 groups are focused on competing at the County Championships and qualifying for the Regional Championship level. The training program targets skill development and preparation for maintenance of skills in competition. Swimmers are expected to attend a seasonal swim camp to take place in selected locations within the country. Competitions for these squads may take place outside the Region for swimmers to experience away meets.

Ages 9-12 as of 31st December

All Squad Expectations:

  • Has an excellent attitude, and desire to progress. Demonstrates a strong work ethic and committed to achieving the attendance requirement as determined by the Lead Coach.
  • Works to make technical changes in all four strokes, starts and turns.
  • Attends designated competitions and enters a wide range of events, as is expected for all squads.

Squad Criteria

  • County qualifying time
  • Coaches will make final group selections for Midland Development and Development 1 based on skill level and ability to train all four strokes in a group environment.

Coach’s Discretion

Coaches reserve the right to move swimmers within our club pathway regardless of age and to the benefit of their individual stage of development.

The Coaching Team

Richard Tomlinson

Richard Tomlinson leads the midland development programme. With many years experience as a competitive swimming coach and parent of a national squad swimmer, Rich offers great insight and experience to his swimmers.

Supporting Richard :

Simon Ward: Level one coach and masters squad swimmer.

David Atkinson: Level one coach and parent of two City of Derby swimmers.

Paula West: Paula is both an instructor and assessor at the IOS (Institute of Swimming) Paula is also a parent of two current City of Derby swimmers.


Swimmers will need the following items: hat, goggles, mesh bag with kickboard, pullbuoy, hand paddles, freestyle snorkel, tennis ball and training fins. Drinks bottle.

Swimmers are expected to wear club kit and the club hat when they are representing City of Derby at competitions and open meets. For details of equipment, clothing apparel and branded City of Derby Swimming Club items that are available to purchase please visit the club kit section.
