Junior Coaching Programme

Children from the age of five through to the age of eight are eligible to swim with one of our junior coaching squads. The programme is designed to complement the ASA swim lesson levels. It offers young swimmers the opportunity to further develop the skills learnt in their lessons, with an emphasis on enjoyment and fun.

There are four levels within the coaching programme:

Level 1: For swimmers aged 5-6 years old who are swimming at ASA stage 4. Coaching session duration is 45 minutes.

Level 2: For swimmers aged 6-7 years old who are swimming at ASA stage 5. Coaching session duration is 45 minutes.

Level 3: For swimmers aged 6-8 years old who are swimming at ASA stage 6.Coaching session duration is 1 hour.

Level 4: For swimmers aged 6-8 years old who are swimming at ASA stage 7+. Coaching session duration is 1 hour 15 minutes.

Where do we swim?

The junior coaching programme uses the teaching pools at the Derby City Council facilities; Moorways and Queens Leisure Centre. These pools are shallow and warm which allows the swimmer to spend longer amounts of time in the pool comfortably, and to develop confidence in the water. When the opportunity arises the groups are taken to the larger 25 metre pools to further develop their swimming skills.

Coaching

The programme is led by the Head coach of our junior squads: Richard Pilcher. Rich brings a wealth of experience to the programme as a level two coach and experienced physical education teacher. Rich is a former competitive swimmer and member of the club since 1992. He still swims occasionally in the masters’ squad for fitness.

Mark Bromage: Mark is another graduate of the Coderby swimming pathway. Mark worked his way up to the national squad becoming a county champion along the way! He recently rejoined the club as a qualified coach.

We are lucky to also have the support of several volunteer coaches:

Charlotte Bentley: level 1 coaching swimming

Jay Leadbetter: level 1 coaching swimming

Marija Millere: level 2 teaching and coaching swimming

Kyle Swannick: coaching assistant

Paige Swannick: coaching assistant
