Day 2 British Champs

The rush continues!

The day started with seasoned international competitors Harriet Cooper & Ellie Baldwin contesting the 100m Backstroke with finishes respectively of 1.02.67 & 1.03.85 which secured places in the evenings finals.

Lewis White then made his first appearance in this years competition – although fully into his preparation for his Paralympic debut in Rio, he was pleased to record a time of 1.08.75 in the 100m MC Backstroke and a subsequent place in the final.

Michaela Stephen contested the second of her Breaststroke events, the 200m, for the second consecutive year and recorded a time of 2.48.37, some 4 seconds quicker than last year.

Step up Sophie Yendell (the current 13 yrs British Swimming Record holder for the 50m Fly). Sophie didn’t disappoint posting a pb of 28.00 seconds, breaking the East Midland & Derbyshire Junior records which she already held.

The focus then turned to Greg Butler contesting his 4th consecutive Championships, In a stacked field he recorded his 2nd fastest ever time of 30.44 seconds ranking him in third place for the evenings final.
The finals session began in spectacular fashion with Ellie Baldwin winning the silver medal in the 100m Backstroke event for the second consecutive year in a pb of 1.02.95 (her first time , sub 1.03.00!).

In the 19 years plus event Harriet Cooper recorded a pleasing time of 1.02.29 and finished in 5th place in a high class field.

Lewis finished in 6th place in his Backstroke event with a pb of 1.07.76.

The excitement built as Sophie Yendell equal led the 14 yrs British age group record with a time of 27.87, another pb in the 50m Fly. Unfortunately she finished an agonising 0.07 secs behind Pia Murray but had the consolation of the silver medal and lowering the East Midlands and Derbyshire Junior records which she had already lowered once during the day!

Greg Butler had a long wait but didn’t disappoint winning the bronze medal in the 16 yrs 50m Breaststroke in a pb time of 30.01 secs and he too, also lowered the East Midlands & Derbyshire junior records that he held.
