Sunday 23rd Oct – Nine City of Derby swimmers along with coach Mandy Bell made their way to Ponds Forge International Centre, Sheffield to compete in the annual ASA National County Team Championships.
Derbyshire were once again contesting the Division 1 event with 19 other counties.
City of Derby swimmers; Ellie Baldwin, Amy Grant, Will Foster, Greg Butler, Sophie Yendell, Michaela Stephen, Guy Farnsworth and Abbey Turnbull made up one third of the Derbyshire team whilst Ryan Gordon also represented Leicestershire in Division 1 and Toma Tokiwa-Smith represented Staffordshire in the Division 2 event.
Amy Grant set the ball rolling in the 16/17 yrs category with a pb and 3rd place in the 100m Freestyle finishing in 57.25secs. Will Foster recorded a time of 53.24 in the same event, finishing 12th, a year young in his category.
Guy Farnsworth recorded a new pb in the 100m Breaststroke event of 1.14.29 in the 12/13 years, finishing in 15th place. Michaela Stephen also pbd in a time of 1.13.35 to record a 7th place in the 14/15 category as a 14 year old. Greg Butler made up our trio of Breaststrokers. He too was a year young in the 16/17 category and managed a 6th place just 0.06 sec behind his pb recording a time of 1.04.60.
Ellie Baldwin who was the Derbyshire Girls Captain completed the 16/17 category 100m Backstroke event in 1.02.53 and secured 3rd place, whilst Guy Farnsworth, in his second individual event of the day was just a fraction behind his pb in a time of 1.08.95 in the 12/13 year olds.
Abbey Turnbull finished the 100m 12/13 years Freestyle event just shy of her pb in 1.03.68.
Sophie Yendell recorded an excellent pb of 1.02.41 in 3rd place in the 14/15 years 100m Butterfly event meaning that City of Derby had a representative in all 4 strokes of the individual events.
City of Derby also had at least one representative in six of the seven relays with all of the above swimmers participating.
One of the highlights of the day was the 16/17 years 4 x 50m Medley team lead by Ellie Baldwin on Back and anchored by Amy Grant on Free, securing one of Derbyshire’s first place finishes.
Unfortunately Derbyshire narrowly missed the 16th place necessary to remain in Division 1 and will now contest the Division 2 event next year with, what we hope will be even more City of Derby swimmers.
Congratulations to Ellie and Amy for their superb work for Derbyshire in their last representation for the county as 17 year olds before uni beckons.
