Club History Since the formation of the City of Derby Swimming Club in 1983 the Club has become the major force in the Derbyshire swimming scene. The membership of the Club comes from all sectors of the community, including some disabled swimmers, (one of whom has competed for Great Britain in the European Deaf Games). We hold over 50% of the County records and regularly provide the majority of the swimmers for the County squad. The Club structure currently supports swimming coaching sessions spread over 48 pool hours per week. This ranges from a Swimming tuition programme, through various training squads catering for developing young competitive swimmers and squads specifically geared towards the needs of Senior and Masters swimmers, to a squad of National standard swimmers. Currently the Club membership is made up of approximately 100 novice swimmers, 240 competitive swimmers and over 200 non swimming (helpers and parent) members. To provide the best possible calibre of swimming coaching the Club retains one full time professional Chief Coach, seven Squad Coaches, two swimming teacher/coaches and many volunteer Coaching Assistants. All coaching staff are ASA qualified and are supported and encouraged by the Club to further their qualifications. Within the Club membership are over 20 ASA qualified officials and numerous volunteer helpers with an in-depth knowledge and experience of organising and running all standards of Gala events adhering to ASA Laws. For the last 17 years the Club has held an annual ASA Designated Open Meet Gala, where swimmers from all over Britain compete to try and achieve qualification for National Championships. This is the only Designated Open Meet in Derbyshire. Also held annually are Open Meet Gala's specifically for Junior (aged 10 to 14) swimmers, for 'B' Grade standard swimmers and an Age on the Day Meet. The Club takes part in the Nationally organised Speedo Swimming League, and Junior League events, frequently being called upon to host (organise) Galas and Divisional Finals. Numerous local Inter-Club friendly Galas are also held to cater for the full range of competing swimmers within the Club. In addition most of the Club's organising officials are also involved in County events, and some at Midland District level. Several Club members are also part of the County ASA Executive Committee, and the Club boasts three past County Presidents within its membership. Members of the Club are also actively involved in the English Schools Swimming Association and National Diving Championships events, which on two previous occasions have been held at Derby. Nationally the City of Derby Swimming Club is now making inroads. Every year we have several competitors at the ASA National Championships and many swimmers at the Midland District Championships. The future of the Club is very promising indeed, with most of our outstanding swimmers still being classed as juniors.
